Everything is more cozy in the fall, and the food is warm and comforting. The mornings and evenings are cool enough to have a fire in the wood stove at camp. When I saw a recipe for chocolate babka, it got stuck in my head. I got the book from the library, and the chocolate babka was on the front cover.
I have discovered that Melissa Weller might have a baking brain similar to mine. Her instructions are the easiest for me to follow. She shared tips on setting yourself up for success.
According to Melissa, all of her babkas reflect old-school New York deli babka, which comes from the Ashkenazi tradition. She uses a sweet bread dough babka with a tight crumb as opposed to the laminated croissant type of babka which is brushed with simple syrup and has more of a Sephardic Middle Eastern influence that has become popular in recent years. After baking, I was in the mood to write about our camp. Come Autumn, the lake activity has tapered off and the wood stoves are taking the chill out of the air in the camp. It's so cozy, we have easy care furnishings. No bright, shiny kitchen. It's really peaceful, and you aren't worried about housework since it is low maintenance. Mr. Moose was a gift from our dear friends for Joe's 60th birthday. They set it up without telling us and it had a sign attached that told people to honk for Joe's birthday.
When I'm not kayaking, I peruse our collection of Adirondack Life magazines. I read them over and over and over. There is so much history in the Adirondack Mountains.
My sister Diane and I put down a new wooden floor in the bedroom area at camp. Actually Joe and Diane did most of the hard work (they were on their hands and knees more than I was). I was handing them the wood, and we had a good system.
As the saying goes, wood will heat you three times:
when it's chopped, when it's stacked, and when it's burned. No truer words.
Be happy,
Deb

What a wonderful refuge you have, Deb! Everything looks so calm and peaceful there. That a nice sized Bass you caught! We're heading to the north woods of Wisconsin for Thanksgiving at our daughter's lake home. What a delicious looking babka! I didn't realize there were two different types.
ReplyDeleteLove your camp and life at camp, Deb!
ReplyDeleteYour babka looks beautiful, Debbie. I made one once, but it was a cinnamon one. I’m glad you enjoyed the cookbook and the author’s instructions.

How fabulous!
ReplyDeleteYour camp is everything it should be including the open woodshed. It reminds me of the one we had in Maine. Lots of wonderful memories. Karen (Back Road Journal)
