Can you tell I am excited about the month of April and gardening season? I got so excited when the shipment of dahlia tubers from a local Dahlia Farm arrived. I ordered them on New Year's Eve when they had their annual pre-order event. I had a list of tubers I was hoping to add to my garden, but they sold out quickly so I quickly picked others.
Items in this shipment that I have placed in soil and will plant outdoors next month. |

I made Old Fashioned Tea Cake Slices from The English Kitchen for my volunteer group, and everyone said they enjoyed them. I used dates instead of the raisins the recipe called for.
Ramps are up, and I forage responsibly. This wild edible is one of the first spring ephemerals to appear in northeastern forests. What do they taste like? They are a peppery and pungent cross between onion and garlic — and a small jar of pesto goes a long way. I only pick enough to make one small jar of pesto, and only take one leaf per plant and leave the bulb intact so the plan can continue to grow.
I planted 100 daffodils last fall, mainly because the wildlife doesn't eat them. We have a real problem with wildlife that we did not have 20 years ago. Climate change, overpopulation of deer, etc. :-(
I included a Taraxacum officinale since it was sitting so pretty :-)
Twice baked potatoes are a favorite here, and toppings vary depending on the growing season. Lately, the toppings have been fried wild leeks, scallions, dill, microgreens, capers, sour cream and Thai chili peppers.

I know the excitement of flowers arriving! I hope your dahlias do well for you. I've been so busy in the landscape it's been really hard keeping up with my blogging friends. I do visit though!
ReplyDeleteYour ramp harvest and pesto sounds wonderful! Ramps are native here in WV too, and festivals happened last weekend around the state. I buy ramp salt from our local salt mill which extracts brine from beneath the Appalachian Mountains.
Your potatoes and tea cake look delicious. I am a big fan of daffodils, amd have tied mine back in hopes of reinvigorated next year's blooms.sonfar we've been fortunate here in our landscape, but I have seen deer along the river, very close by.
Can't believe April is nearly over! Happy gardening!
I never even heard of ramps, Debbie. That’s a new one to me. All those dahlias will be gorgeous and you’ll be busy planting. Twice baked potatoes are a favorite of mine and I’ll have to check out the tea cake. Enjoy baseball season! ❤️
ReplyDeleteRamps grow wild in the forest here, but not every forest. I often see them on hikes in early spring, and they are already done for the season. I texted you the recipe for the tea cake! We loved it with dates.
DeleteP. S. I’m sitting on my patio and listening to a cardinal right now.
ReplyDeleteRamps are completely new to me. I like pesto, so I might like it made with ramps. I need to see your teacake recipe: I've been looking for one! Happy April (almost May)!
ReplyDeleteRJ, I texted you the teacake recipe!
DeleteWatching new things pop up in the garden is the most exciting time of the year! I did my plant shopping early this week and it's been nice enough at night to leave them outside, thankfully! Fingers crossed we don't have a cold snap.
ReplyDeleteIt's always exciting to see new blooms in the spring. I've never heard of ramps either! I love dahlias, and have some that I saved over winter from last year, and they are doing great in my greenhouse. Your teacake looks delicious! Love all your blooms, and the cardinal is always a joy to see! Many blessings to you!
