Son Nick and me geocaching in the woods at the local library. The idea is simple: A container is hidden, they note the
coordinates with a GPS unit. The finder locates
the container with only the use of a GPS
receiver. The rules for the finder are simple: "Take some stuff, leave
some stuff." There is always a logbook, sometimes a pencil, and various
prize items including videos and trinkets.
To give you an idea of what a "cache" can look like, here is one that we found hanging in a tree. Inside the cache is a "log book", and we sign and return the geocache to its original location.
We record our find on Geocaching.com.
I found this peace sign in a cache, Joe took my picture, and then I placed the button back in the cache. At its simplest level, you need the free Basic Membership, then you visit the "Hide & Seek a Cache" page. Enter your postal code and click "search." Choose any geocache from the list and click on its name. Enter the coordinates of the geocache into your GPS Device. Use your GPS device to assist you in finding the hidden geocache.Sign the logbook and return the geocache to its original location. Share your geocaching stories and photos online. I use the GPS on my iPhone.
Here I am signing the log book in the cache.
This is a cache we found hidden in a split rock off a trail near our camp. Often it will contain DVD's that can be exchanged. There were a variety of items in this large cache, including bug repellent.
You never know what you will see (or find) while geocaching.
We were out on a Friday evening walk and located a cache at one of the local colleges named "Secret Snacks". Inside the cache were a few recipes that you could take if you left one. I took the recipe for Pumpkin Pie Bites and left a recipe for my Filled Strawberries. These are so good!
Recipe:
1/2 cup raw almonds
1/2 cup pecans
1-1/2 cups pitted Mejool dates
1/4 cup shredded unsweetened coconut
1-1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
1/8 teaspoon salt
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Mix all of the ingrendients in a food processor until well combined. If too thick, you can add a little water. Form into 1 " balls and placing on the prepared sheet as you work until all of the "dough" is used up. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour and enjoy!
Perhaps you would like to geocaching a try.
