Dalgona Coffee

Easter Morning was pretty relaxed. I'm usually prepping for a large family dinner, and have everything organized but not this year. We had the entire day to ourselves, and no solid plans for a menu except we knew we were having lasagna. We spent the entire morning listening to John Prine's 2019 NYE concert on the Blue Moon Cafe (local radio station), and then watched Andrea Bocelli at 1:00.
If you’ve been on social media in the last couple months, you may have seen photos or videos of fluffy-looking coffee. Joe and I both love our coffee, and our niece from Los Angeles posted it on her Facebook page. I was curious.

Dalgona coffee, otherwise known whipped coffee or cloud coffee, is the newest social media craze. Unlike regular coffee, or even a latte, dalgona coffee stands out because of its frothy top - made by whipping instant coffee (I used instant espresso) with sugar and water, which results in a visually appealing fluffy light brown foam that is then spooned over milk. The trend apparently started earlier this year when South Korean actor Jung Il-woo made it on TV.
.
This is how to make dalgona whipped coffee.

You’ll need two tablespoons of instant coffee, two tablespoons of
sugar, and two tablespoons of hot water.
After pouring all of the ingredients into a bowl, you whisk with either
an electric mixer or a whisk until the mixture is “thick and creamy”.

As for why the whipped drink is so popular right now - apart from its
Instagrammable aesthetic - it seems people confined to their homes amid
the coronavirus pandemic are looking for distractions.

I spooned the whipped coffee onto our hot coffee. You can also serve it over iced or warmed milk. We enjoyed it!

Have you tried anything different during the shelter in place? Joe has been doing his yoga class on Zoom, and I took two paint and sip classes on Zoom. Both local companies that we always do business with.

  2. I've seen this craze within a group of folks I follow who shop exclusively Aldi. I drink my coffee black so don't think it's for me, but sounds like it would be a real sugar/caffeine high. And it looks pretty, lol.
