Summer days and nights have been lovely this week. I’ve been keeping an eye on my Northern Lights app. We live in an area where we can see the Northern Lights from time to time, and this week is looking good since we have clear skies.
I've started to tidy up my garden for winter. The clay pots and urns were washed and dried in the sun this week.
This year I had sweet success in growing sunflowers. The squirrels dig up the seeds I plant in the ground so this year I tried my best to outsmart them. I attached "horse troughs" planters to the upper part of the fence and planted sunflower seeds in it. This is my first harvest!

I was elated when this new clematis vine started blooming at the end of August. I lost the tag and forgot that I even planted it. I enlisted some of my garden friends to help me identify it. I love the name...Sweet Autumn Clematis. Which is why it started blooming in Autumn.
Love your experiments, Deb! Thise hirse troughs look amazing. We have a dahlia farm about an hour away. I've never grown them, but may try a compact variety next year. I've also started cleaning up in the landscape. I understand from someone quoting the farmer's almanac that when the sweet autumn clematis blooms, one can expect their first frost 6 weeks later
ReplyDeleteThat will be Oct 15th for us, as I spotted (and smelled that glorious fragrance!) on Aug 31. I hope you have plenty of space, as it is an invasive species.
Lucky you to be so close to the Northern Lights! From near that same location where our dahlia farm is, a reader sent our local news program a video this morning, capturing the Polaris Dawn Falcon 9 passing through the dark morning sky at 5:30am, very cool!

ReplyDeleteOh such beautiful posies, Debbie! Isn’t your clematis vine so pretty? I’ve had such trouble with critters eating things right to the ground, even things I’ve had for years. It’s so frustrating. I haven’t added any fall decor besides sunflowers either. Happy September! 🌻
ReplyDeleteYour dahlias are gorgeous! I just love this time of year when I can go out and pick a dahlia bouquet several times a week. I love how you out-smarted the squirrels!! I hope you get to see the Northern Lights! I read many northern states have a chance of seeing them but we don't have ideal viewing like you have at the lake!
